Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a noninvasive procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain and is used both as diagnostic tool and treatment modality for a wide variety of neurological and psychiatric disorders. Diagnostically, single-pulse TMS is used to measure activity and function of specific brain circuits in humans, including assessment of the function and integrity of the human motor system. With respect to therapy, repetitive TMS (rTMS) is proven to be a safe and highly efficacious treatment of neurological and psychiatric diseases, including depression, post-stroke movement disorders, limb spasticity, neuropathic pain, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
Combining transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and electroencephalography (EEG) within a real-time brain state-dependent stimulation paradigm enables the study of relationships among dynamic brain activity, cortical excitability, and plasticity induction. The video demonstrates a protocol to synchronize TMS pulses with the phase of ongoing EEG oscillations.
